The “Weißer Stein” project occupies a prominent position on the square of the same name in the centre of the Eschersheim district of Frankfurt. The linear building, angled at the western end, follows the line of the street and forms the northern edge of the triangular square. It replaces a two-storey building (with a 1-euro shop on the ground floor) and a 1970s warehouse. With the garages at the back and the open ramp leading down to the underground car park, the site was very underused and closed off from the square by a partly continuous wall. In contrast to these pre-existing structures, the new development, designed for the client Homes Development, responds to the spatial situation of the street and the square. It features a high-quality clinker-brick base storey, a horizontally articulated rendered façade with colour-differentiated parapet bands and a mix of volumes, all of which enhance the public space.

Both parts of the building are accessed directly from the street. The residential floors have three apartments per floor leading off the hallway, in a layout that means two of those apartments are dual aspect – facing southeast and northwest. A recess in the street façade gives rise to a niche on the east of the site, a space originally intended to accommodate an existing tree at this spot. However, the tree has since been felled by the Parks Department, due to disease, and so suitable replacement planting will be decided upon as part of the project. Providing 20 residential and four commercial units – two of them shops on the ground floor – the project supports the character of a mixed-use urban area. All the apartments have private outside space in the form of a balcony, loggia or roof terrace. The inner courtyard, for the use of all residents, is carefully landscaped and incorporates play areas for children.
